Gahat ko daal – गहतको दाल (Horse-gram pulse soup)

Ayurveda explains that gahat (horse-gram) is invaluable for getting rid of the kidney stones because it is a diuretic(substance that increases urine flow). Gahat soup consumed twice a day for about a month proves to be the most effective.
This daal is eaten during winter time in Kathmandu as it has a warming effect on body in the cold winter days. Being rich in iron, proteins and calcium, the pulse is ideal for children.
Ingredients:
  • Gahat (Horse gram) – 1 Cup
  • Tumeric – 1/2 Tea Spoon
  • Ghee/Butter – 1 tsp
  • finely grated Ginger – 1 tbsp
  • Asafoetida (Hing) – Pinch
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
Preparation:
Soak the dal in water for few hours (over night preferred). After soaking, the size of the dal expands which makes it easier to get rid of any unwanted foreign substance.
When clean soaked dal is ready, heat the ghee in the heavy bottomed sauce pan. When ghee is warm, add cumin seed and let it change the color to dark brown. Add turmeric, asafoetida to the ghee. After few seconds, add soaked dal, salt, and grated ginger. After shallow frying few mins in ghee, add about 2 cups of water and let it cook for about 30 minutes in a medium flame. Dal is ready once the pulse is soft .
This dal goes pretty well with steamed rice or as a soup by itself.
