Nepali Style Grapefruit or Pomelo Salad (भोगटे साँधेको)

What is Grapefruit or Pomelo Salad (भोगटे साँधेको)?

In Nepal, Pomelo (known as Bhogate) is enjoyed greatly during the warm afternoon of winter months. Pomelo Salad, known as Bhogate Sadheko, is a favorite snack during family weekend. Since this salad involves heavy citrus fruit, it is rich in vitamin C and helps to fight with cold during cold winter days. Here is my variation of Bhogate Sadheko Recipe:

Ingredients (There is no hard rules on the count of citrus fruit.  This is just a suggestion)

  • 1 Bhogate or pomelo
  • 1 Pink grapefruit
  • 3 to 5 Oranges
  • 1 cup Plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup roasted and ground sesame seed powder
  • 3 tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • Red chili pepper- to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp timur powder (Szechuan pepper)
  • Salt -to taste

Peel all the citrus (Bhogate, grape fruit, oranges) and cut fruit into pieces taking the seeds and inner lining out. Add yogurt, salt, sugar, sesame powder, timur powder, red chili powder in the bowl and stir it well.

Heat a pan, pour cooking oil onto it. Once the oil is hot, splutter Fenugreek seed on it. Once the fenugreek seeds turn golden brown, take off the pan from stove and add turmeric and immediately pour it into the bhogate mixture before turmeric is burnt. Incorporate all the ingredients well and the Pamelo Salad is ready to be served.
